Sacred Holika Dahan Ritual

The central fire ceremony of Holi Purnima

    Gathering Materials

    Collect dried wood, cow dung cakes, hay, and organic materials. Each family contributes to the community pyre.

    Sacred Location Setup

    Choose an open area near a temple or community space. Clean and purify the site with Gangajal (holy water).

    Holika Effigy

    Create an effigy of Holika using cloth, hay, and natural materials. Place it at the top of the pyre.

    Moonrise

    Light the Sacred Fire

    Light the fire at moonrise while chanting mantras. Perform seven circumambulations (parikrama) around the fire.

    Next Morning

    Collect Sacred Ash

    Collect ash for tilak and home protection. Then begin Rangwali Holi celebrations with colors!

Transliteration

Prahlādasya Vacho Śṛṇvan Bhaktiṃ Kṛṣṇe Karotyasau. Narasiṃhaṃ Namaskṛtya Viṣṇuṃ Cha Praṇamāmyaham.

Translation

By hearing Prahlad's words, one develops devotion to Krishna. I bow to Narasimha and offer obeisances to Lord Vishnu.
