Complete Satyanarayana Puja
- 1Start
Purification and Sankalpa (Intent)
After bathing and wearing clean clothes, sit before the altar. Sprinkle Ganga water or clean water around the puja area. Take a handful of water, state your name, gotra (lineage), date, and the purpose of the vrat, then release the water onto a plate. This sankalpa formalizes your spiritual intent.
- 210 min
Kalash Sthapana (Sacred Vessel Installation)
Fill a copper or brass kalash with water. Add a betel nut, coin, and rice grains. Place five mango leaves around the rim and set a coconut on top. Place the kalash on a bed of rice grains in front of the Satyanarayana image. The kalash represents the divine presence.
- 320 min
Ganesh Puja (Invoking Lord Ganesha)
Before worshipping any deity, Lord Ganesha must be invoked first for obstacle removal. Offer turmeric, kumkum, flowers, and modak to Ganesha while chanting "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah." This ensures the ceremony proceeds without hindrance.
- 430 min
Satyanarayana Avahana (Invocation)
Invite Lord Satyanarayana into the image or idol. Ring the bell, light the ghee lamp, and chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Satyanarayanaya Namah." Offer flowers, Tulasi leaves, and akshata (rice grains) while invoking the Lord's presence.
- 540 min
Shodasopachar Puja (Sixteen-fold Worship)
Perform the sixteen traditional offerings: Asana (seat), Padya (foot wash), Arghya (hand wash), Achamana (sipping water), Snana (bath), Vastra (cloth), Yajnopaveeta (sacred thread), Gandha (sandalwood), Pushpa (flowers), Dhoop (incense), Deep (lamp), Naivedya (food), Tambula (betel), Dakshina (offering), Namaskara (prostration), and Pradakshina (circumambulation).
- 660 min
Panchamrita Abhishekam (Five-Nectar Bath)
Bathe the Satyanarayana image or kalash with Panchamrita, a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and sugar. Pour each item separately while chanting the respective mantras. After Panchamrita, bathe with clean water and dry with a clean cloth.
- 775 min
Satyanarayana Katha (Sacred Narration)
This is the heart of the vrat. Read or listen to all five chapters of the Satyanarayana Katha. The reader sits facing the altar, and all participants listen attentively. No one should leave during the reading. The Katha takes 60-90 minutes.
- 8150 min
Aarti and Final Prayers
After the Katha, perform aarti with camphor and a ghee lamp. Sing or chant the Satyanarayana aarti while circling the lamp before the deity. All family members and guests participate by joining palms in prayer. Ring the bell throughout.
- 9160 min
Prasad Distribution
Distribute the Panjiri, bananas, and other offerings to every person present. The priest or reader receives first, followed by elders, guests, and finally the host family. No one should leave without receiving prasad. This completes the ceremony.
Aarti and Closing Ceremony
Performing the Aarti
- Light camphor on the aarti plate along with a ghee lamp
- Circle the flame clockwise before the deity three times
- All family members join with folded hands
- Ring the bell continuously during the aarti
- Sing the Satyanarayana aarti or chant the main mantra
After the Aarti
- Pass the aarti flame to each person present for blessings
- Apply kumkum tilak to all devotees
- Offer final prostration (sashtanga namaskar) to the deity
- Begin prasad distribution immediately
- Thank all attendees for their participation
Important Reminder
The Satyanarayana Puja is not complete until every participant has received and consumed prasad. As emphasized in the Katha, neglecting the prasad or allowing participants to leave early diminishes the spiritual merit of the entire ceremony. Ensure all guests are informed of this before the puja begins.
