What is Sankashti Chaturthi?
Sankashti Chaturthi(संकष्टी चतुर्थी) means "liberation from troubles." This sacred fasting day is observed on the 4th day (Chaturthi) of Krishna Paksha each month, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.
The unique aspect is its connection to moonrise. Devotees fast from sunrise until they sight the moon, then break their fast after offering prayers to Lord Ganesha under the moonlight.
The Moon Connection
According to legend, the moon once mocked Lord Ganesha. In response, Ganesha cursed anyone who looks at the moon to face false accusations. This was later modified to bless those who worship Ganesha under moonlight during Sankashti.
Angarki Chaturthi
When Sankashti falls on Tuesday, it's called Angarki Chaturthi— considered extremely auspicious. Observing this single fast is said to equal the merit of all 12 monthly Sankashti observances combined.
