Shiva Abhishek with Panchamrita

The Abhishek (sacred bathing) of the Shiva Linga is the central ritual of Sawan Somwar worship. During Shravan, performing abhishek with panchamrita (a mixture of five sacred ingredients) is considered especially auspicious and multiplies the spiritual merit of the offering.

🥛

Panchamrita Ingredients

Panchamrita is prepared by mixing these five sacred ingredients, each representing a divine quality:

  • Milk (Ksheer): Represents purity and nourishment
  • Curd (Dahi): Represents prosperity and good fortune
  • Ghee (Clarified Butter): Represents victory and spiritual strength
  • Honey (Madhu): Represents sweetness in speech and harmony
  • Sugar (Sharkara): Represents happiness and contentment

Step-by-Step Abhishek Procedure

  1. 🕉️
    Step 1

    Prepare the Shiva Linga

Clean the Shiva Linga or murti with plain water. Place it on a clean base with a drainage spout (Argha) facing north. Set all abhishek materials nearby in order of use.

  2. 💧
    Step 2

    Begin with Ganga Water

Pour Ganga water (or clean water) over the Shiva Linga while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya". Pour slowly in a continuous stream from above. This purifies and consecrates the Linga.

  3. 🥛
    Step 3

    Milk Abhishek

Pour fresh cow milk slowly over the Linga. Milk represents nourishment, purity, and devotion. Chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra during this offering.

  4. 🍯
    Step 4

    Honey Abhishek

Drizzle honey over the Linga gently. Honey symbolizes sweetness in speech and relationships. Continue chanting Shiva mantras throughout.

  5. 🏺
    Step 5

    Panchamrita Abhishek

Mix milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar to create panchamrita. Pour this sacred mixture over the Linga. Panchamrita is considered the most auspicious abhishek offering.

  6. 🍃
    Step 6

    Offer 21 Bilva Leaves

Place 21 fresh bilva (bel) leaves on the Shiva Linga one at a time. Each leaf should be placed with its smooth side facing the Linga while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" with each offering.

  7. Step 7

    Final Water Ablution

Conclude the abhishek by pouring clean water to wash away all offerings. Dry the Linga gently and apply sandalwood paste (chandan) and kumkum.

  8. 🌸
    Step 8

    Decorate and Offer Flowers

Place white flowers like jasmine around the Linga. Offer dhatura fruit and flowers if available. Light a ghee lamp and incense (agarbatti) before the deity.

The Sacred Bilva (Bel) Leaf Offering

🍃

Why 21 Bilva Leaves?

The bilva (bel) leaf is Lord Shiva's most beloved offering. The three-leafed structure of each bilva leaf represents the three eyes of Shiva, the three gunas (qualities of nature), and the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.

  • 21 leaves: Traditional offering for Sawan Somwar, representing the 21 forms of Shiva
  • Smooth side up: Place the smooth, dark green side facing the Linga
  • Fresh leaves: Use freshly plucked leaves; dried leaves are not preferred
  • With stem removed: Remove the stem before offering
🕉️

Offering Method

The proper method of offering bilva leaves enhances the spiritual benefit:

  • Hold the leaf with both hands near its base
  • Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" as you place each leaf
  • Place gently on the top of the Shiva Linga
  • Do not remove leaves once placed on the Linga
  • If bilva is unavailable, offer any green leaf with devotion

Tradition: Offering even a single bilva leaf to Lord Shiva with true devotion is said to be more meritorious than donating gold.

Sacred Mantras for Sawan Somwar

🕉️

Om Namah Shivaya (108 Times)

ॐ नमः शिवाय

Meaning: I bow to Lord Shiva, the auspicious one

Practice: Chant 108 times using a rudraksha mala during the abhishek and throughout the day. This is the Panchakshari (five-syllable) mantra and the most powerful invocation of Lord Shiva.

During Sawan: The spiritual potency of this mantra is believed to multiply manifold during the sacred month of Shravan.

📿

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्

Meaning: We worship the three-eyed one (Lord Shiva) who is fragrant and nourishes all beings. May He liberate us from the bondage of death, as a cucumber is severed from its vine, and grant us immortality.

Practice: Recite 108 times for protection, healing, and overcoming fear. Especially powerful during Sawan for health and longevity.

🔱

Har Har Mahadev

हर हर महादेव

Meaning: Every one is Shiva; Hail the Great God

Practice: This devotional exclamation is chanted with enthusiasm during Jal Abhishek (water offering) and while visiting Shiva temples during Sawan. It expresses surrender and celebration of Shiva's omnipresence.

📖

Shiva Chalisa Recitation

The Shiva Chalisa is a devotional hymn of 40 verses praising Lord Shiva's divine qualities and narrating his sacred deeds. Reciting it during Sawan Somwar worship brings blessings of knowledge, courage, and spiritual wisdom.

  • When to recite: After completing the abhishek and before the evening aarti
  • How to recite: Sit in front of the deity, maintain a calm mind, read with clear pronunciation
  • Frequency: Once or twice during the evening worship session
  • Alternative: If Shiva Chalisa is not available, recite the Shiva Panchakshari Stotra or any Shiva devotional hymn

Temple Worship vs Home Worship

🏛️

Temple Worship

Visiting a Shiva temple during Sawan Somwar carries special significance. The collective devotion and the consecrated Shiva Linga amplify the spiritual experience.

  • Timing: Visit during morning hours or Pradosh Kaal (twilight)
  • Offerings: Carry Ganga water, milk, bel leaves, and flowers
  • Jal Abhishek: Pour water or milk on the Shiva Linga (Jalabhishek)
  • Participate in aarti: Join the temple aarti for collective worship
  • Parikrama: Walk around the Shiva Linga (do not cross the water channel)

Sawan Special: Many temples organize special Shravan events, Rudrabhishek, and extended worship hours during Sawan Mondays.

Home Worship - Step by Step

  1. 🏠
    Morning

    Set Up Home Shrine

Place a Shiva picture or small Shiva Linga on a clean platform. Arrange a water bowl, milk, flowers, and incense nearby. A copper or brass plate works well as a base.

  2. 🙏
    After Bath

    Morning Invocation

After your bath, light a diya and incense. Sit before the shrine and invoke Lord Shiva with folded hands. Take the Sankalpa (vow) to observe the fast with devotion.

  3. 💧
    Morning

    Simple Abhishek

Pour water and milk over the Shiva Linga or sprinkle on the picture. Even a symbolic abhishek with just water is fully valid for home worship.

  4. 🍃
    Morning

    Offer Bilva Leaves and Flowers

Place bilva leaves and available flowers before the deity. If bilva leaves are not available, any green leaves offered with devotion are accepted by Lord Shiva.

  5. 📖
    Afternoon

    Recite Shiva Chalisa

Read or recite the Shiva Chalisa with full concentration. If you do not know it by heart, reading from a book or phone is perfectly acceptable.

  6. 🪔
    Evening

    Evening Aarti and Conclusion

Perform the evening aarti by waving a lit diya in clockwise circles before the deity. Sing or play Shiva aarti. Distribute prasad and break the fast.

Ritual Complete

Both are equally valid: Whether you worship at a grand temple or a simple home shrine, Lord Shiva values the sincerity of your devotion above all else. Many great saints attained Shiva's grace through simple home worship during Sawan.

Evening Aarti - Concluding the Worship

🪔

Aarti Procedure

  • Light the aarti diya: Use a five-wick ghee lamp or a single camphor flame
  • Clockwise circles: Wave the lamp in seven clockwise circles before the deity
  • Sing the aarti: Recite "Om Jai Shiv Omkara" or another Shiva aarti
  • Ring the bell: The bell's sound drives away negative energies
  • Offer the flame: Pass the aarti plate among all family members
  • Distribute prasad: Share the blessed food offerings with everyone present
🙏

After the Aarti

  • Seek blessings: Bow before the deity and pray for family welfare
