General / SmartaSun, Aug 9, 2026Mon, Aug 10, 202612:17 AM - 2:31 AMGeneral observance follows the Ekadashi tithi at local sunrise. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.
Vaishnava / ISKCON-styleSun, Aug 9, 2026Mon, Aug 10, 202612:17 AM - 2:31 AMVaishnava observance matches the General date because Ekadashi is clear before Arunodaya. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.

Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Significance

One of the most powerful Ekadashis that grants material prosperity and spiritual advancement. It removes sins accumulated over many births and fulfills legitimate desires of devotees.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

In ancient times, there lived a hunter named Draupadika who was cruel and sinful. One day, he accidentally observed Kamika Ekadashi by staying awake all night near a temple. Due to this unknowing observance, he was freed from all sins and attained Vaikuntha after death.

Another story tells of King Muchukunda who observed this Ekadashi and was blessed with a son. The power of this fast is such that even unintentional observance yields great benefits.

Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira that observing Kamika Ekadashi grants the merit of donating 1000 cows and performing Ashwamedha Yagna. It removes all sins and fulfills the desires of devotees.
