Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Meaning of the Name

Devutthanaidentifies this Ekadashi's traditional name and devotional theme. The observance belongs to Kartika month, Shukla Paksha.

Significance

This Ekadashi marks the awakening of Lord Vishnu from his four-month cosmic sleep (Chaturmas). It's considered extremely auspicious as it signifies the return of divine activity and the beginning of the wedding season.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

When Lord Vishnu went to sleep at the beginning of Chaturmas, all auspicious activities ceased. The gods, demons, and humans waited eagerly for his awakening. During this time, a demon named Murdanav created havoc.

On Devutthana Ekadashi, as devoted souls observed the fast and sang devotional songs, Lord Vishnu awakened. The first sound he heard was the beautiful bhajans of his devotees. Pleased with their devotion during his sleep, he granted them special blessings.

Murdanav was immediately destroyed by the awakened Lord, and prosperity returned to all realms. This is why Devutthana Ekadashi is considered the most auspicious day to begin new ventures.
