Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Meaning of the Name

Nirjalaidentifies this Ekadashi's traditional name and devotional theme. The observance belongs to Jyeshtha month, Shukla Paksha.

Significance

This is a rigorous and spiritually revered Ekadashi. Tradition says observing this fast with devotion grants the combined merit of the year's Ekadashi observances.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

Bhimasena, the strongest of the Pandavas, was unable to observe the regular Ekadashi fasts due to his enormous appetite. He was troubled that his brothers gained spiritual merit while he couldn't control his hunger.

Sage Vyasa advised Bhima to observe just one Ekadashi in the year - Nirjala Ekadashi - which would give him the benefits of all other Ekadashis. The traditional form is a waterless fast, but devotees should modify it when health, age, medication, heat, or pregnancy requires.

Bhima successfully observed this most difficult fast with determination and devotion, gaining spiritual merit equal to his brothers who observed all Ekadashis. Hence this Ekadashi is also called Bhimaseni Ekadashi.
