General / SmartaThu, Oct 22, 2026Fri, Oct 23, 202612:56 AM - 4:42 AMGeneral observance follows the Ekadashi tithi at local sunrise. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.
Vaishnava / ISKCON-styleThu, Oct 22, 2026Fri, Oct 23, 202612:56 AM - 4:42 AMVaishnava observance matches the General date because Ekadashi is clear before Arunodaya. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.

Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Meaning of the Name

Papankushaidentifies this Ekadashi's traditional name and devotional theme. The observance belongs to Ashwin month, Shukla Paksha.

Significance

The name 'Papankusha' means 'destroyer of sins'. Like an ankusha (elephant goad) controls an elephant, this Ekadashi controls and destroys all types of sins accumulated over lifetimes.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

There once lived a Brahmin named Krishnadasa who was very sinful despite his birth in a noble family. He committed various wrongdoings and lived an immoral life. When he died, Yamaraja's messengers came to take him to hell.

However, unknowingly, Krishnadasa had once stayed awake on Papankusha Ekadashi night near a temple. Due to this merit, Vishnu's messengers also arrived. After a debate, Vishnu's messengers won, and Krishnadasa was taken to Vaikuntha.

This story demonstrates that Papankusha Ekadashi is so powerful that even unknowing observance can destroy the greatest sins and grant liberation.
