General / SmartaFri, Apr 2, 2027Sat, Apr 3, 20273:46 AM - 4:49 AMGeneral observance follows the Ekadashi tithi at local sunrise. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.
Vaishnava / ISKCON-styleFri, Apr 2, 2027Sat, Apr 3, 20273:46 AM - 4:49 AMVaishnava observance matches the General date because Ekadashi is clear before Arunodaya. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.

Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Significance

'Papmochani' literally means 'liberator from sins'. This Ekadashi has unparalleled power to absolve all sins, regardless of their gravity or number.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

King Rukmarath was a righteous ruler, but his son Prince Dhurmatia was completely opposite - cruel, sinful, and immoral. The prince committed every possible sin and caused great distress to his parents.

When the prince died, he went to the worst hells. King Rukmarath consulted sage Sumati, who revealed that only Papmochani Ekadashi could save his son. The king observed the fast and transferred the merit to his deceased son.

Immediately, the prince was liberated from hell and appeared before the king in a divine form, thanking him for the liberation. This demonstrates the supreme power of Papmochani Ekadashi to absolve any sin.
