Vaishnava / ISKCON-styleFri, Dec 4, 2026Sat, Dec 5, 20261:29 AM - 4:57 AMVaishnava observance matches the General date because Ekadashi is clear before Arunodaya. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.

Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Meaning of the Name

Utpannaidentifies this Ekadashi's traditional name and devotional theme. The observance belongs to Margashirsha month, Krishna Paksha.

Significance

Utpanna means 'born' or 'originated'. This is considered the original Ekadashi from which all other Ekadashis derive their power. It has supreme importance in Ekadashi traditions.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

In ancient times, a powerful demon named Murasura threatened the gods. Lord Vishnu fought with him for a thousand years and then went to rest in a cave. From Lord Vishnu's meditation emerged a beautiful goddess.

When Murasura tried to attack the sleeping Vishnu, this goddess fought and killed the demon. When Lord Vishnu awakened, he was pleased and declared that this goddess would be known as Ekadashi and would be worshipped on the 11th day of every fortnight.

Lord Vishnu blessed Ekadashi that whoever observes her fast would attain his divine realm. Thus, Utpanna Ekadashi represents the birth of Ekadashi Devi and the origin of all Ekadashi observances.
