General / SmartaThu, Mar 4, 2027Fri, Mar 5, 20271:12 AM - 4:24 AMGeneral observance follows the Ekadashi tithi selected at local sunrise; this Ekadashi spans more than one sunrise. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.
Vaishnava / ISKCON-styleThu, Mar 4, 2027Fri, Mar 5, 20271:12 AM - 4:24 AMVaishnava observance uses the same date in this calculation; strict temple calendars may mark special Mahadwadashi rules. Break after local sunrise and after Hari Vasara ends.

Why dates can differ

Ekadashi fasting is decided from local sunrise, not only from when the tithi begins. Vaishnava calendars also check Arunodaya, the period before sunrise, so Dashami overlap or an Ekadashi spanning two sunrises can move the observance to the next day.

Significance

This is the ultimate victory Ekadashi, associated with Lord Rama's victory over the seemingly impossible. It grants victory in the most challenging situations.

Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

Before his final battle with the ten-headed Ravana, Lord Rama was advised by sage Vasishtha to observe Vijaya Ekadashi. Despite being an incarnation of Vishnu, Rama followed human dharma and observed the fast.

Rama fasted completely, worshipped Lord Vishnu (his own divine form), and spent the night in meditation. Sita and Lakshmana also observed the fast with him.

The next day, Rama entered the battle with renewed divine energy and defeated Ravana, who had seemed invincible. This victory established Vijaya Ekadashi as the supreme fast for impossible victories.
