Adhik Maas
Why Some Years Have 26 Ekadashis
Most lunar years have 24 Ekadashis. In Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas years, Padmini and Parama are added.
24 regular + 2 Adhik Maas
A normal lunar year has 12 lunar months, each with one Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and one Krishna Paksha Ekadashi. When an intercalary lunar month is added, that month contributes Padmini Ekadashi and Parama Ekadashi.
Regular year
12 months x 2 pakshas = 24 Ekadashis.
Adhik Maas year
24 regular names + Padmini + Parama = 26 Ekadashis.
